Book One, Desiree
About the Book: the novel is a MLK trilogy, title Real the hot September Harvest. It is literature of the Civil Rights Movement’ history.
On Mother’s Day 1960, after meeting MLK in Atlanta, Desiree – the title of Book One – and the Freedom Riders are attacked by the Klan in Anniston, AL. Did she faint, or die and return? Is she the reason an elderly Black vet of WWII kills himself? Answers are revealed and rejected. The Treatments fail, years pass, desperation sets in. Then, Desiree meets a young minister returning from Egypt with spiritual enlightenment he garnered from an ancient scribe of god’s philosophy. Desiree, now a yoga adept, is intrigued. He claims they are missing links in Blacks’ religious practices, and can demystify the mythology of white supremacy. Her feelings soar, but she soundly rejects his ugly denunciation of Black’s force fed Christianity. The minister’s rebound kindle a hasty romance. Desiree purrs, “Why am I a flower of sacrifice.” “Flowers nourish the soul, sacrifice means atonement.” Enduring moments, strumming her heart strings with speils like why African-Americans are proponents of jazz, ripens her for the obvious question. Desiree resists; she is not ready to reveal her dark side. The reverend persists, and says he is the chosen pastor of a church in a small Southern town. It promises a chance to establish the MLK Center of Social Awareness and Spirituality, make MLK’s Promised Land a reality.
Book Two: Alan Duberry, a brilliant young minister, is committed to make Rev. Martin Luther King’s Promised Land a reality. In college, he studies the works of brilliant black scholars and realizes that Christianity feeds racism. Alan travels to Egypt and finds in the works of Tehuti, the ancient scribe of God, the spiritual enlightenment he needs to reach his goal.
His and Desiree’s lives intersect in Philadelphia ten years after her ordeal. These two lonely, ambitious persons intrigue each other. Alan works to demystify the mythology of white supremacy. Desiree develops a mind, body and spiritual philosophy that negates feelings of inferiority.
Book Three: A saga of their life’s work is set in Hastings, North Carolina, a former plantation willed to slaves in the Civil War. It is also Alan’s birthplace. He returns as pastor of its prestigious black church, with one condition. He and Desiree can establish a center for spiritual awareness they will call the Martin Luther King Center. They attract a core following, including an interracial couple, but negative community reaction compels church trustees to suspend activities.
Alan’s refusal to comply comforts Desiree, but his suggestion that they use cowardly tactics to sway the trustees surprises and angers her. They argue. His demand that she honor the church’s expectations backfires. Would he, for any reason, violate his conscience? If not, expecting it of her breaches her trust in him.
The confrontation with Desiree compels Alan to reveal a dark secret that threatens their marriage, their project, and his tenure as pastor. He must regain her confidence, and win over the trustees. Meanwhile, she reassess her vows to him, and her own well being. In a watershed moment, Desiree concedes that she indeed found herself in him. Whatever the consequences, she will not abandon him.
